The 2007 Student Media Festival

This year’s festival was held at the Hyatt Regency Orange County in Anaheim, California October 25 – 27, 2007, and featured winning entries in a variety of media categories, shown in a film-festival format.

Thursday, October 25th

The program at the festival began on Thursday night with an inspiring keynote from Marco Torres, an Apple Distinguished Educator, who is well-known for his work at San Fernando High School and for the creation of his free educational website, “Flickschool.” As a social studies teacher and technology director. he empowers students to explore their world through the creation of media projects.

After Marco’s rousing presentation, ISMF participants enjoyed socializing over refreshments at the Hyatt with other young media producers from around the nation and other parts of the world.

Friday, October 26th

Friday, October 26, brought the component of ISMF that makes it really special. Throughout the day, workshops were offered for students of all ages and their adult sponsors to teach a variety of media production skills, using state-of-the art equipment and software provided by our sponsors. What a joy it is to see students, teachers and parents learning to use the latest media production software and hardware together in a non-threatening educational environment! These newly acquired skills will help these eager learners create even more impressive projects in the years ahead. The 2007 workshops included Chromakey Broadcasting with Adobe Visual Communicator, Digital Storytelling with Adobe Photoshop Elements and Adobe Premiere Elements, a Photo Safari with Olympus Digital Cameras, Apple Computer’s iMovie and Garage Band utilizing M-Audio keyboard technology and PowerPoint.

We packed in even more fun for our participants after dinner as the winning projects are shown in a theatre-style setting, complete with popcorn and soda. The young producers were interviewed to share their insight into the motivation and techniques used to create their projects. It’s always ‘standing room only’ at these events as teachers, students, and their families enjoy socializing and applauding the winners as they gain inspiration for next year’s competition.

Saturday, October 27th

As a culminating event, on Saturday morning, winners will attend an awards ceremony where students are recognized for their achievements. In addition to the trophies and certificates given to the ISMF winners, many prizes such as Adobe software, t-shirts, and posters are given away as door prizes throughout the ceremony.
